Yamaha YZF-R125

Spotted this on one of my customary reconnoiters of the Cape Town bike scene. Now I'm not really a fan of corporate branding on my motorcycles but i have to say this looked pretty sick so i stopped to do what most bike shop proprietors secretly hate…shoot the breeze (and maybe the bike).Fortunately Rafe Fortes of Platinum Motorcycles is an affable fellow who was happy to let me basically take over his shop for an hour or so while i took these pics of what's probably the only YZF-R125 around…although I'm sure I'll be corrected on that count…

At the moment only the R15 V.1 is available at the local Yammie dealers… so what's the difference? In short…a phatter rear tyre,a 130 section,a shapely swing-arm (some are calling it a banana swinger cos it's,ahem, shaped like a banana) as opposed to the V.1 R15's rather utilitarian extruded steel item and a gorgeous tail piece section that's worthy of the YZF-R name.I also have it on good authority that one of these will be used at the annual 8 hour endurance race for low cap. bikes at Killarney race track…there's an acid test if ever I've heard of one.

On Rafe's insistence i even took the little 125cc moto for a spin and although it was far from a bike test I'm happy to report that it's as solid a little motor as any of the Japanese bikes I've ever ridden and also surprisingly spritely even with my 80 or so kilos on the back…and did i hear someone say Power Commander?Of course the riding position is slightly torturous but that's nothing out of the ordinary for this style of bike.

I expect that the little R125 really starts to shine when you start to corner with confidence but I'll be damned if I'm gonna go peg scraping around the city center on unfamiliar wheels, especially considering that it's essentially one of the most expensive small capacity production bikes in the world.
