W.P. Regional Moto Champs (7th)

Power Series – Killarney International Raceway. Some unexpectedly dicey conditions at the 7th round of the W.P. regional moto champs made for some interesting results and not a few spills.Qualifying session went off without a hitch although the surface was quite dodgy in places but the real problem developed just minutes before the first heat. The weather had been benignly overcast all morning but as time was called for the powersports, classics and clubman race a light spring shower came down catching everybody by surprise and on slick tyres. So as the superbikes scrambled to get their wets on the green light fell and one lap later both Arnold Eckersly and Wesley Jones (Jack Hammer's SV650) were picking themselves up out of the dirt under red flags after losing the 'who can stay on the longest' competition. The winners lined up for a restart but fortunately race control came to it's senses and cancelled heat 1 for both the Powersport and Superbike races. This left a long, tense wait till the 2nd heat.By 4pm the weather had improved and racing got underway.

Local legend,Danie Maritz walked the classics class (and 1st overall) on his DMR Suzuki GSX-R750 and behind him raged the battle for top powersport (class A) honours between Warren Guantario and Graeme Green on identical bikes with Guantario emerging the victor after much swopping of positions.Powersport class B went to Mike van Rensburg who also punched it out on similar terms with Chris Williams.

In the superbikes race, both Brandon Haupt (MX Clean Kawasaki ZX1000) and Hayden Jonas (PJ1 Kawasaki ZX6R) did not start.Brandon because of a fueling problem and Jonas because of a broken hand inflicted at the short circuit. This injury has left the door open for fellow 600cc rider,Andre Calvert (KC Transport Kawasaki ZX6R) who's been tussling with Jonas from the get go and after this weekends tally of points, finds himself comfortably leading the supersport class but still not counting any unhatched chickens.

Ronald Slamet (Novel Ford Kawasaki ZX1000) is still the man to beat in the liter class but the surprise showing in 2nd place is Trevor Westman (Ocean Sizzler Yamaha R1) who put up a terrific fight on a rather dated R1against the double-sided onslaught of Malcolm Rapson and Gerrit Visser, both on Kawasaki ZX1000's.Class b goes to Mark van den Berg (Planet Electronics Honda CBR1000RR) and class c sees relative newcomer,Xander du Plessis (Hypower Kawasaki ZX6R) take his first podium.
